United Utilities - Asset Management

At a Glance

I was the lead developer in a team developing asset and work management software that interfaced with Mincom Ellipse. During my time at United Utilities I developed many applications dealing with the many faces of asset and work management.

Key Features

Mobile Work Management tool, able to download and synchronise with the server; Scheduling Tool; Management Realtime Monitoring Tool; Task Management and Calendar Tool.

Technology

ASP.NET, Winforms, VB.NET, .Net Framework 2.0 and 3.5, SQL Server, Mincom Ellipse

More Details

Mincom Ellipse contains an enterprise level asset management system. Unfortunately it is not very user friendly or customisable. As a result the United Utility asset data was out of date and the work history patchy.

My first role was to develop an application that engineers could take to a job on their laptops, and record details of fixes and scheduled maintenance. This had to be easy to use and work offline. Other members of the team developed a simple asset management website. Combined, these tools drove quality data into Ellipse and the company started to be able to rely on the system for the first time.

Our success led to more and more applications, bringing in other parts of the business, making the data more and more accessible.

We were so successful that OFWAT mentioned the tool in their reports into United Utilities and AMT Cybex (the UK distributors of Mincom Ellipse) used us as a success story in their sales literature.

Client Comments

Fran is a highly capable and talented .Net developer and designer. He led a team of developers within United Utilities on many projects and enhancements for a major asset management system. Not only does Fran have deep .Net and SQL skills, he also communicates very well with key business stakeholders and maintains very good relationships. I would highly recommend Fran for any development or design work, particularly in Microsoft technologies.
